What is semi-chisel chain?

Semi-chisel cutters have a radiused corner where the top plate meets the side plate. They scoop wood rather than shearing it with a sharp 90° corner. That profile stays sharp longer in soil, bark, stored logs and frost, and it is more tolerant when filing by hand.

On this site, semi-chisel includes:

  • Oregon 73DPX (3/8" .058") and 75DPX (3/8" .063"), also sold as VersaCut
  • Stihl Rapid Micro (RM) — a micro-chisel profile used for the same jobs
  • Panther SC and guarded SCG, including Panther Plus lines with top-plate witness marks

How to choose the right loop

  1. Read pitch and gauge from the bar or old chain (.325", 3/8", .404" or 1/4"; .043–.063").
  2. Count drive links. Do not order one link unless you are buying a reel.
  3. Stay in this collection if you want the rounded cutter. Skip and full-skip options are less common in true semi-chisel; most loops here are full-comp.

Who this collection is for

Buy semi-chisel if you cut firewood from dirty or stored logs, work around soil and grit, want longer gaps between sharpening, or prefer a calmer chain than full chisel. This is the go to chain for general cutting, clearance and mixed UK hardwood/softwood.

Do not use this collection for ripping slabs along the grain unless the chain is filed at about 10°. Use the ripping range for milling.
