Frequently Asked Questions

What chain does a Stihl MS250 or MS251 take?

Most MS250 and older MS251 saws run .325" pitch × .063" (1.6mm) chain. Newer MS251 versions often use .325" × .050" (1.3mm). Common drive links: 14" ≈ 56 DL, 16" ≈ 62 DL, 18" ≈ 68 DL. Always check the stamp on the motor end of your bar.

Will Sugihara, Oregon, or Tsumura bars fit my MS250/MS251?

Yes. Any bar made for Stihl Group 2A with matching pitch and gauge will fit. Solid-billet bars from Sugihara and Tsumura are popular upgrades for stiffness and durability.

What is the best bar length for an MS250 or MS251?

The 16" (≈62 DL) is the most common and best balanced length for these saws. A 18" (≈68 DL) gives extra reach for firewood and property work while remaining well within the engine’s power. 14" bars are also popular for tighter work.

Do I need a new sprocket?

Only if the current one is worn (deep grooves) or you are changing pitch. Standard .325" setups use the original sprocket.
